You have probably noticed by now that Canada's official languages are English and French. You probably speak another language too, and the Ontario Government knows that. They have created the International Languages Program (or, “Saturday School”) to help you learn or maintain your own language.
Do I have to pay for classes?
No. International Language Classes are free in Ontario schools. Many private language classes or university courses are also available. These will usually cost money and are not part of the International Languages Program.
What Languages Can I Learn?
The languages offered depends on the area in which you live. For example, if you live in a Spanish-speaking area, there may be Spanish offered. Some of the classes available throughout the province include: Arabic, Cantonese, Farsi, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Tagalog, Portuguese, Somali, Spanish, Tamil, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
Where Can I Sign Up?
Classes happen at schools across Ontario. They are sometimes after school or on the weekends (Saturday or Sunday). The types of courses offered are different at each school and school board. Contact your local school board to learn about which programs are offered in your area.
