Knowing your rights, options, and available resources is essential to help you get through this time.
Check your health insurance coverage
All international or exchange students in Ontario must have health coverage provided by the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). The cost of UHIP is usually included in your tuition fees, and you are enrolled in the plan automatically.
Your student health insurance may not cover pregnancy-related expenses if you got pregnant before starting your studies or when you were not covered by insurance.
Be sure to check the details of your health insurance policy or ask your insurance company for more information on pregnancy coverage.
According to the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), you do not need to show ID at the hospital in an emergency to receive treatment. Healthcare costs vary from hospital to hospital. You might be able to negotiate the rates of care with the hospital administration. If you have a midwife, they can help you with this process.
Find free health resources
If your health insurance doesn't cover the costs of your pregnancy, free resources like midwifery services, community health centres, and Health811 can help.
Get advice and support about your pregnancy
Organizations like Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights, the SHORE Centre or Planned Parenthood Toronto can provide you with advice and support.
Counselling and psychological support services for pregnant students might be available at your university or college. Don't hesitate to talk to a professional if you need help.
Learn how to get financial support as a student with children
Your school might offer grants and financial aid to students who are parents, as well as affordable housing options, such as family housing.
You can contact your Student Union for information about childcare services and subsidies available.
