Refugee travel

Can a refugee be invited to by someone in another country and respect the invitation? Travel to the country and come back to Canada in due time?

Answer

Hello and thank you for your question.

If you have protected-person status (as a refugee) and you want to travel outside of Canada, you'll need to get a Refugee Travel Document. This document is recognized in all countries as a valid travel document.

However, keep in mind that you can't use the Refugee Travel Document to go to the country you're a citizen of, or to go to the country that's persecuting you.

The Government of Canada has more information on how to apply for the document and travel outside of Canada as a refugee.

For more information, read about your rights as a refugee.

We hope this helps.
