What programs can help me get training?
Finding employment as a young person can be challenging because many jobs require skills that can only be obtained through training, but what can you do if you don’t have the time or resources to pursue options like post-secondary education?
It sounds too good to be true, but some employment and community organizations offer paid training programs specifically for youth. These employment programs are usually short-term, pay at least minimum wage, and offer mentorship and support in gaining skills and future employment.
Some programs like the Youth Job Connection program with JVS Toronto provide general pre-employment training while others like Building Up’s Trainee programs are specific to a certain sector.
What qualifications do I need for these programs?
These programs are designed for youth who are just starting on their career path so there are minimal or no requirements for education or training. Programs might have eligibility requirements like:
- Being between 18-29 years old
- Being unemployed
- Being legally able to work in Canada
Some programs for equity seeking groups like the Aborigional Education and Employment Program or the CEE programs with the Centre for Young Black Professionals might have further eligibility requirements. It is best to reach out to the organization for additional information.
Are there youth-specific employment opportunities?
The Government of Ontario and the City of Toronto periodically offer jobs that are only open to people between the ages of 18-29 years old. These jobs are usually short contracts but have additional employment guidance and provide skills that can be useful in getting more gainful employment in the future.
