What is an employment counsellor?

Employment counsellors can help you find work by offering support like job search assistance, resume help, interview prep and more for free.

Employment counsellors help job seekers find work by providing personalized support. They understand newcomers’ unique challenges and offer practical solutions, such as helping with resumes, preparing for interviews, and explaining the Canadian job market and workplace culture.

The services employment counsellors provide are funded by the government, so they are free to newcomers. You do not have to pay for any of their services.

What services do employment counsellors offer?

Employment counsellors provide various services to give clients the tools and knowledge necessary to succeed in the Canadian job market. These services include:

  • One-on-One Job Search Support: Tailored guidance to help clients search for and secure employment effectively.
  • Navigating the Canadian Labour Market: Insight into job trends, employer expectations, and industry-specific opportunities.
  • Resume and Cover Letter Preparation: Expert assistance in creating professional and compelling documents that meet Canadian standards.
  • Mock Interviews: Customized interview practice to boost confidence and performance, featuring job-specific questions.
  • Connecting Clients with Community Programs: Access to local initiatives that offer additional support or training.
  • Resources and Tools: Job boards, networking tips, and advice for ongoing career development.

Who can access an employment counsellor?

Most employment counselling services are typically open to permanent residents, convention refugees, and those with CUAET or MOME2023 designations.

Through Employment Ontario, you can still access employment counselling services even if you are not a permanent resident or convention refugee. Employment Ontario helps individuals with different immigration statuses, such as work permit holders, international students, refugee claimants, and more.

If you are unsure about your eligibility, contact your local employment or settlement agency to discuss your options.

When should I see an employment counsellor?

Sometimes, the hardest part is knowing where to begin. Employment counsellors help you create a plan tailored to your goals and needs.
